Instagrams of the Art World: Conceptual Snowmen, Gucci Mane, and Michael Stipe

What happens when French artists are let loose on the streets of New York on the coldest days of the year? The snowmen get chic. As per Camille Henrot, recipient of the Silver Lion at the 2013 Venice Biennale, this Chinatown snowman got conceptual sartorial attention by “Daniel Burden.” Was that a typo for Daniel Buren, the French artist known for his minimalist works composed of colored stripes? Both artists are, after all, represented by Paris gallery Kamel Mennour. Either way, great use of snow.

Photographer Alex Prager shared a pic from the installation of her just-opened show at Lehmann Maupin. And she collects wigs; check out our own Ashton Cooper’s 25 questions for the artist.

Artist Frances Stark has a transfixing, elliptical Instagram feed we can’t quite take our eyes off. Take this post, par example, with a story involving rapper Gucci Mane over New Year’s Eve, as follows: “ok well bobby was invited to NYE party but got stuck in Vegas on a burnt out mission, didnt make it back in time. Meanwhile his cuz is at the NYE party @ hotel gets in an elevator w blunt behind his ear, meets Gucci who buys blunt for $50 then cuz ends up fucking 3 Swedish bitches w Gucci, how can this be true? Lil primo don’t lie.”

Artist Tauba Auerbach, known for her methodical and optically challenging works, got a new chair.

Artist K8 Hardy took to Instagram to wish musician Michael Stipe (looking very Steve Zissou in his beanie) a happy birthday.

Photographer Ryan McGinley one-upped Hardy with his own self-included birthday tribute to Stipe.

Another post of an artful snowman, this one by artist Andrew Kuo.

We’ve seen plenty of dried up X-mas trees in the first week of the new year, but the tossed out gingerbread house is a new one. Thanks to gallerist Andrea Rosen.

The gingerbread house reminded us of Klara Liden’s memorable 2010 show, a poetic collection of dead X-mas trees at Reena Spaulings.
